Blackberries & Autumn leaves

"How beautifully leaves grow old.
How full of light and color are their last days."

~ John Burroughs ~

Just in case you need a pretty way to leave a quick note...

...or if you'd like a little envelope for seeds, money, a gift card, etc....

"September Morning"

When in these golden hours
The day dawns honey-bright
And down we stroll the misty paths
Slow ripening in the light
Of second flush, of sodden roses,
Of dewy maple leaves,
We pluck the meadow of autumn lilies
And berries from the trees.
We sit in the wonder of too-soft days,
Listening for summer's parting sighs,
And drink in the sweetness
of the new-mown morning
And lie under whippoorwill skies.

~ Deborah A. Bennett ~

  12. What beautiful designs, as always, Megan! Thank you.: ) And I just love the poem you included--but I can't find it or the author anywhere online (there are Deborah A. Bennetts, but none who seems to be "our" poet). Help!

Thank you again for sharing your lovely work. xoxo

    1. Hi Pat! It is SUCH a beautifully written poem :) Actually, I happened upon a nice, big stack of "Ideals" magazines at my favorite local thrift store for $1 per magazine. I only bought a few, then after discovering how wonderful the magazine was, I went back and (thankfully) bought all the rest! I found this poem in Vol. 57, No. 4 of "Friendship Ideals." I'm still unsure as to where they found her poem, as it appears they didn't cite their source. I'll let you know if I find out anything on her :)

    2. Thank you, Megan, for the info. How lucky you were to find that stack of Ideals! My grandmother always had them on her coffee table--they came from her French-Canadian nun relatives (she and my mom used to say that nuns "love" Ideals! hehe). I inherited one from the collection; it's from the mid-1950s.

I suspect that our mystery poet was no one "famous". I can't put my hands on my Ideals copy, but I seem to recall seeing poems written by others who were unknown to me and whose works were not credited. Perhaps they were reader submissions--or were written by in-house staff. I'm going to pretend that Deborah Bennett wrote dozens of poems that she was too shy too publish, except for the occasional one in a magazine, and that somebody will find the manuscripts hidden under in an attic, and sell them to a publisher who will finally make her as "famous" as she deserves to be!)

I'll keep snooping around and let you know if I find out anything about her, too.: ) xoxo

    3. Well, it looks as if Ideals Publications, which was bought by Guideposts in 2000 (the same year as the magazine edition in which you found Deborah Bennett's poem), does in fact publish readers' submissions--I'm not sure if it features material from other sources or not.

I guess we might never find out anything about Deborah.: ) But aren't we lucky that you discovered her beautiful poem?!
