Sweet Little Note

Today I want to share my favorite postcard with you...

There is a booth at my favorite local antique store that specializes in postcards and old photographs.  I stop there often, if only to look through the lovely images.  On one such visit a few years ago, I happened to be looking through the flower-themed postcards.  I found this Lily of the Valley image beautiful, but was captivated by what I found upon turning it over...

I love that Mr. Alden Hopkins found a way to send his wife
her favorite flowers, even though he was miles away.
What a sweet man to send his wife such a note...

It traveled from New York to Ohio,
from a Mr. to a Mrs.,
and after nearly 60 years... to me.

I'll be sure to hang on to their sweet little note...
and treasure it always.

Hope you're having a Sweet Saturday!
Thanks for stopping by!

~ Read Janet Martin's poem 'Rags'
partially inspired by this postcard. ~

  2. That is so touching. It reminds me of the movie The Notebook.I always think of that era as romantic when perhaps if you lived in it , it may have also been otherwise.:)Thanks for sharing a sweet story.

  4. Doesn't this make you loathe technology...even if only for a mere micro-second, because without it you could not have shared this with us..BUT, a text simply will never leave a legacy or heritage for our children. This is such a dear story, and just what I needed for something I am working on right now. God moves in wonderful friends. Thank-you.
Also, thank-you for sharing your story about your dad and you on the beach. It warmed me to my toes;)

Hope you are having a wonderful Monday. i am doing some catch-up reading because the kids are back in school today and i have a Monday off from baby-sitting. A treat which would lose its 'special-ness' if it happened every day, but oh-h-h, after extra kids at my house almost every day for two weeks!!! this is nice:)

  5. Kat ~ you're right, they certainly resemble little fairy bells :) My dad has always been an amazing gardener, but he's never grown these for some reason. Maybe we can both try growing some for the first time this year :)

  6. Lucy ~ I know this sounds crazy, but I've never read or seen The Notebook ~ sounds like a good goal to accomplish this year! I think it's so easy to see only the good things about an era, especially when it's romanticized in books, movies or television. My husband always says he wishes he were born in the 40'5 or 50's though...

  7. Diana ~ I enjoyed your sweet post about Lily of the Valley :) Thanks so much for sharing your memories with us!

I'm always interested in legends surrounding flowers, so I thought I'd share...

It is a symbol of humility in religious painting. Lily of the valley is considered the sign of Christ's second coming. The power of men to envision a better world was also attributed to the lily of the valley. (wikipedia)

Aside from that it is just a pretty, dainty little flower... looking forward to (hopefully) having it in my garden :)

  8. Janet ~ you're right! I feel the same way when I'm looking through all the beautiful graphics online... if no one would've taken them from paper to digital, they might never have been seen and enjoyed. However, I'm still glad they exist in the 'real' world :)

Isn't it amazing what you can glean from just a few short lines? He was probably left-handed, well-spoken, and... a newlywed? I can almost envision him strolling through Macy's and on his long walk back to Grand Central Station... wonder what flavors of ice cream he had :)

I knew you'd like that story ~ made me smile sharing with you :)

Enjoy you're much deserved day of rest!!!

    1. In case your interested...I let my imagination stroll and wrote 'Rags'... a poem that had been brewing for a little while, but I simply could not find a good 'hook verse':) The postcard did it!
